On April 17, 1943, William died near the Montesquieu Airfield in Algeria after sustaining internal injuries, including fracture lacerations and broken ribs, due to a jeep accident. At 3 pm on April 18, 1943, he was buried at the American Cemetery in Tébessa, Algeria Row 6, Plot B, Grave 6, beside Private First-Class James D. Reagan and Corporal Wallace M. Bullock, who were also killed on April 17, 1943. Between July 1, 1947 and November 21, 1947, William was moved to his final resting place, North Africa American Cemetery Row 8, Plot 1, Grave 1.
In June of 1944, Lipsey’s sister, Sarah Lipsey Brewer, requested to receive his personal effects, due to the fact that she was listed as his beneficiary on his insurance policies. Despite this, Rosetta was awarded his possessions in accordance with the current laws. Some of these possessions included a wristwatch, fifty packages of cigarettes, five decks of playing cards, two Air Corps insignias, and his certificate of marriage. On September 28, 1948, Mrs. Rosetta Lipsey was sent an American flag as a mark of respect to William's memory.
